With material costs still fluctuating and supply chain problems not yet solved, estimating has become a hot issue. A new article to give you some guidance, “Eight Common Construction Estimating Mistakes”, is on page 11. “Mastering the Full Process of Construction Cost Estimating”, on page 20, gives you the steps to take in successful estimating. “Is it Time to Say Goodbye to Your Spreadsheets?” — a timely article on why you should use software instead of spreadsheets — appears on page 30. And “Estimating Edge Granted Patent”, on page 45, will inform you about the latest tool in your estimating toolbox. “Understanding Alternative Building Products”, on page 42, explains creative ways of dealing with the current shortage of building materials. And “Inflation and How it Affects Construction”, on page 16, gives some pointers on how the construction industry can deal with ongoing rampant inflation. We’re also offering our tried-and-true square-foot cost studies of new buildings and renovation projects submitted by your peers. McHenry High School, the cover story, featured on page 8, is one of these case studies. The project received an Award of Merit from the Illinois Association of School Boards for excellence in the design of education environments, which accommodate business incubators, journalism, advanced engineering, construction trades, advanced manufacturing, robotics, advanced graphics, biomedical sciences, chemistry, and mathematics. Other projects covered in this issue include: • A renovation project — that of the interior of a charming, 100-plus-year-old home — involved (as with all old houses) none of the walls being plumb, or even level! The renovation of the four-bedroom, one-bath home began in July 2019 and took 16 months. See page 39. • The approval process for new construction of offices with tenant lease space was very difficult due to this site’s location in a small historical town. Approvals were eventually obtained from the City planning commission, the historical commission, the downtown business authority, and the County. You can read about this mixed-use project on page 23. All of these studies include square-foot prices for divisions and regional cost trends to help you convert the total project cost to your area. Thank you for choosing this issue of Design Cost Data. The results, based on a survey of nearly 550 A&E firms in the United States and Canada, identify the key challenges impacting the industry, as well as highlighting bright spots (despite the construction worker shortage), and forecasting future trends. Produced in collaboration with ACEC, ACEC Canada, AIA, and SMPS, the Clarity study serves as a benchmarking tool to help firms understand the state of the A&E industry and provides detailed insight and analysis into technology trends, business development, financial statements, project management, and human capital management. The report revealed that, in order to deliver successful projects, the industry must be able to close the staffing and technology gaps. Firms are very optimistic about pipelines, and have strong backlogs, but rising labor costs are impacting financial performance. Finding and retaining qualified staff jumped significantly, with close to half (44 percent) of respondents indicating it was their top challenge. Key findings include: • Firms are optimistic about their pipelines, but must be strategic about pursuits. Firms are very optimistic about revenue growth projections, with growth forecasted at 17% compared to the previous year. • Closing the staffing gap by leveraging technology will be critical for project success. Addressing labor challenges will require firms to invest strategically and purposefully. Firms can’t simply fill all positions overnight and, while 43% of firms identified hiring more staff as one of their top initiatives, firms will also need to look for efficiencies through technology • Firms must continue to leverage technology to reduce manual and time-intensive tasks. As companies struggle to address labor challenges in the short term, technology can help to improve efficiencies in every area of the business. • Financial stability is at risk with rising labor costs. While firms are reporting an average backlog of nearly nine months, overall financial performance was down – impacted primarily by rising labor costs. “While the previous year presented many challenges for architecture and engineering firms, firms are very optimistic about the year ahead, and are preparing for a more proactive and productive year. The Deltek Clarity report highlights the talent crisis that is impacting all areas of the business, with increased employee turnover and the majority of firms citing more open positions than last year,” declared Megan Miller, Director of Product Marketing at Deltek. She added, “In addition, respondents are dealing with a technology dichotomy: firms need to keep pace with tech trends and continue on their digital journey; however, lack of time may prove to be a top challenge in seeing that through. The major themes we saw in this year’s report are staffing challenges, the need for business process automation, managing a strong backlog and pipeline and leveraging technology to drive positive change,” About Deltek: Deltek is a leading global provider of enterprise software and information solutions for project-based businesses. They provide project intelligence, management, and collaboration to more than 30,000 organizations and millions of users in over 80 countries around the world. Their industry-focused expertise helps firms achieve performance that maximizes productivity and revenue. www.deltek.com Deltek Releases Architecture & Engineering Study The 43rd Annual Deltek Clarity Architecture & Engineering study results suggest that, despite a talent crisis, A&E firms are adjusting after a reactive year to be more strategic and purposeful in projects and how they run their businesses. To meet its goal of consolidating 10th through 12th graders at the west campus and developing a freshman center at the east campus, the district prioritized the needs of both learning communities to establish specific expansion and renovation criteria aligned with the evolving curriculum. As a part of the design process, the school district and Wold collaborated extensively with local business partners to create a community-driven legacy that emphasizes local opportunities. The school’s future-ready career and technology labs incorporate settings for active collaboration with students and local businesses. The innovative curriculum led the way for the design of the new upper west campus addition, which offers science, technology, college, and career-oriented pathways. The 80,817-square-foot, three-story addition and renovation go beyond the traditional models of learning environments to approach the diverse needs of every student. Spaces include specialized amenities yet remain adaptable to programmatic changes. The learning environments accommodate business incubators, journalism, advanced engineering, construction trades, advanced manufacturing, robotics, advanced graphics, biomedical sciences, chemistry, and mathematics. Opportunities for diverse learning modes are blended throughout the expansion with a critical design emphasis on daylight and connectivity. A multi-purpose space resides on the upper floor, with the ability to be converted to additional classrooms in response to potential enrollment growth. Combining these unique opportunities for students into one campus has established equality in learning experiences that had been previously divided by the two sites. Renovations of the existing school include a resource center, upgraded art labs, a choir room, a career center, and improvement to circulation with passive study zones. Placement of the addition prompted the relocation of an expanded secure entrance, reconfigured parking and drives, and a rebranded identity to the entire campus. Exterior material choices combine familiar metal panel colors with vibrant accents at the entrance to showcase school colors, and brick selections match the existing palette. The layered feel to the exterior relates to the functions within each floor level, starting with technology and industry at the base, science in the middle, and math at the top floor. The project has received an Award of Merit from the Illinois Association of School Boards for excellence in the design of educational environments, was elected as one of 22 for display in the Educational Environments Exhibition at the 2021 IASB/IASA/IASBO Joint Annual Conference in November 2021, and is a winner of the Patcraft Schools of the Future 2022 award. The classrooms are filled with an abundance of natural light. The manufacturing lab contains advanced machinery.Next >
