UF Health Florida Recovery Center, Legends Building

Posted: June 7, 2019 | Projects

The UF Health Florida Recovery Center, Legends Building was created to enhance the performance of the neighboring Florida Recovery Center, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility. As the importance of overcoming addiction was emphasized by the community, there was a need to set up and develop a modern facility to combat this growing disease. The construction and complete renovation of the building by BBI Construction Management Inc. started in March of 2018 and lasted 10 months.

Construction of this new UF Health expansion consists of two floors. The first floor has a large conference room, numerous meeting rooms along with an auditorium seating over 170 occupants with the express purpose of inviting guest speakers and housing group activities. The second floor has added many new offices, and a new home for the UF Department of Psychiatry and the UF Health Addiction Medicine-Florida Recovery Center.

Among the many improvements, the interior of the building was completely changed with new construction that turned the building from a night club of questionable reputation to a modern and appealing haven where people can come to and receive treatment. The exterior of the building also saw drastic improvements -- a revitalized brick façade, new roofing, exterior windows and awning. Even the parking lot was updated with new asphalt and exterior lighting.

The renovated medical facility took some creative engineering To change a building with a checkered past into a place where UF Health and its doctors can aid those who struggle from addiction and other ailments.

After almost $3 million in improvements, this open and inviting renovation offers needed hope as only one in about 10 people in the U.S. with a substance use disorder get the treatment they need.  This expansion allows for continued clinical studies and serves as a resource for patients and their families. The newly renovated building provides a new environment that maximizes everyone a chance at recovery from addiction, a new space that will change the lives of so many for years to come.
