Texas Spine & Joint Hospital

Posted: July 14, 2021 | Projects

When the world-renowned Texas Spine and Joint Hospital in Tyler, Texas, needed to expand capacity to better serve its patients, it called on UEB Builders. Texas Spine and Joint is best known for its outstanding treatment and surgery capabilities in hip and knee replacement, spinal surgery, and pain management. The expansion work was delivered in four phases over a 20-month period, which included 55,000 square feet of new patient clinic facilities, 18,000 square feet of patient beds, the renovation of 33,000 square feet of existing operating rooms, and extensive modifications to site infrastructure.

The new additions were designed by the Fort Worth, Texas, office of HKS Architects. The patient clinic facility was planned as a concierge-driven working platform, with a definite “hospitality” look and feel. Valet parking is offered upon arrival, and the main entry features a two-story open rotunda with a sweeping stainless steel and glass grand stair. The entry leads to an open, transparent registration area with private cubicles. Segmented waiting areas include registration, physician waiting, in-patient waiting, and in-patient/out-patient surgery. The rotunda carries a Class I occupancy while the adjacent facilities carry Class B occupancies, so particular attention was given to ensuring the floor plans complied with life-safety smoke and fire restrictions.

The main building addition added pre-admission areas for testing and screening, a 23-hour new-bed wing, new kitchen and dining facilities, and six new “high-intensity” operating rooms, which give doctors and surgeons a much higher level of operational flexibility. The second level of the main facility carries a Class B occupancy, and provides 24,000 square feet of new medical office building space, offering an ideal adjacency for patients and doctors.

The new facilities utilize a structural steel moment frame founded on drilled piers and grade beams. The buildings are clad with a complimentary pallet of Lueder’s limestone, ACM composite metal panels, and Portland-cement stucco, and are topped off with a pre-finished standing-seam roofing system.

The Texas Spine and Joint Hospital additions and renovations represent the second of four healthcare projects successfully completed by UEB for this client, typical of UEB’s track record of maintaining an 85% repeat-customer standing. UEB is currently in negotiations to build a fifth medical facility for the same Owners.
