Ruby Memorial Hospital Atrium Infill Addition & Renovation - Morgantown, West Virginia

IKM was retained by the West Virginia University Healthcare system to look at strategies and design solutions on its main campus to:

• Improve wayfinding; 
• Co-locate outpatient services on the lower floors in a more accessible location; 
• Expand the useable square footage; and, 
• Establish a more distinct brand identity.

The existing tertiary care facility consisted of two, ten-story patient wings on either side of an open air courtyard, with the lower three floors recessed from the building front to establish the access and patient drop off underneath the footprint of the hospital. That access was bifurcated with two entries; one under each tower. 

IKM recommended enclosing the outdoor space under the elevated patient wings. This provided the opportunity to create a new central four-story atrium entrance space with a new covered dropoff to establish a single defined main entry with certain iconic architectural elements. 

Complex structural solutions were required to allow the space under the patient wings to be transformed into useable square footage. 

The parameters of this project required that the existing hospital remain entirely occupied with uninterrupted access throughout the demolition and construction phases. 

Furthering the complexity of this challenging project was the urban nature of the site. The access road is located approximately forty feet away from the construction area, and provides the only connection to the patient drop off and parking lots. Contractors were required to keep this roadway open and protected throughout the entire project and manage a very compressed lay down space. Additionally, no parking spaces were taken out of service at any time during the construction process. 

The solution consisted of adding a four-story atrium with outpatient services flanking the east and west side of the atrium – integrating natural light to support a variety of waiting and public spaces. 

Ground floor consumer-focused spaces such as a coffee shop, a gift shop, and registration and administration areas are immediately available. A monumental stairway of fers the option of vertical connection to all four levels, which support waiting and respite spaces as well as access to the main cafeteria. The space has become a highly active hub and acts as the central focus of the institution. It has transformed the face of the hospital in support of creating a superior customer experience. 

IKM embraced the challenges and unique characteristics of this complex scope of work and maximized the design opportunities that it provided along the way. The result is a completely re-envisioned main entrance and drop off for patients and visitors. This solution provided for a vertical rezoning of the facility supporting the growing outpatient volumes with valuable square footage reclaimed and made available to support the expansion of the facility.
