The new Ridgeland City Hall, completed in 2020, is the first building constructed in Ridgeland City Center, centrally located in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Master planned in 2008 by Dean and Dean/Associates Architects, the City Center was the dream of Mayor Gene McGee, the Board of Aldermen, and Alan Hart, Director of Community Development. The 25-acre site is to house a future Performing Arts Center, which will flank the community green space opposite City Hall. Future buildings include a Community Center, Library, Museum, and private development.

Dean and Dean served as architect for City Hall along with the consultants of Wagonner Engineering (Civil), Spencer Engineers (Structural), ERG Engineers (Mechanical/Plumbing), Jon D. Rice (Electrical), and Trent Rhodes (Landscape Architect). The project team has a long history of working together and working for the City of Ridgeland. The design team worked closely with the owner to develop a building that serves the current needs of the city staff, as well as future growth and expansion. The construction team included Benchmark Construction – Construction Manager, Mid-State Construction – Prime General Works, Shivers Electric – Prime Electrical, and JL Roberts – Prime Mechanical.
The 32,000-square-foot two-story building was planned and designed to house departments of city government, including Mayor’s Suite and Administration, Community Development, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and IT/Traffic Control. Major interior features of the building include separate space for bill collecting (water, sewer, etc.), traffic control (including city and state camera feeds), an emergency operations center in Public Works, computer networking for the entire city, Board Room, city history room, and two-story entrance lobby.
Dean and Dean worked with Andy Young, a local stained-glass artisan, to create a custom piece of glass art inside the two-story entrance lobby that represents the city and the Mayor’s love of cycling. Included in the Board Room is a second piece of custom glass on the back wall that further represents the city. Features of the Board Room include full audio/visual systems for presentations, along with seating for up to 75, with moveable chairs making the room usable by multiple groups and events.
Primary construction materials and systems utilized in the project include brick façade with architectural pre-cast and metal panel accents, structural steel, concrete slab on grade, and TPO roof. Glazing systems included curtain wall and storefront with thermal breaks and 1″ Low-E Insulated glass in all exterior locations. Interior materials include porcelain tile, LVT, specialty wood ceilings, solid core wood doors, and reeded and frosted glass doors at entrances to each department. Certain interior areas are protected with Level 7 bullet resistant sheetrock and glass assemblies for protection during an active shooter situation. While the building is not LEED certified, Mechanical and Electrical systems follow all guidelines to create an energy efficient building. In order to operate the Emergency Operations Center at all times during a catastrophic weather event, an emergency generator was included to run all primary systems, including the Mayor’s suite, Public Works, and the Board Room.
