The new administration center for the Newton Community School District is representative of the city’s perseverance. After being devastated by the closing of the Maytag Company’s operations in the area, the City’s economy has reemerged with strength, diversity and focus on Green Manufacturing and sustainability.

Looking to help revitalize the main thoroughfare to downtown, the Newton Community School District chose to renovate and relocate their administrative services to an abandoned grocery store, which had served the community for many decades. After a total renovation and transformation, it now serves as the school district’s administration and educational hub.
The newly reimagined building is separated into two functions, with the front half of the building serving as the administration center and the back half dedicated to an education center. The new administration center houses the administrative staff offices, a large conference room, and support spaces for the district. The main public entrance parallels with the street and uses the existing canopy structure which is a distinct feature to the original design.
The entry leads into the main lobby space that has direct access to the large conference room and administration reception. The reception then continues on to the offices and support spaces. The large conference room serves as the district’s boardroom, professional development space and can be subdivided into three separate conference spaces, creating the ultimate flexibility.
At the north end of the building, a large cardinal red wing wall uniquely defines the main entry to the educational center. The education center provides a reception space, classrooms, commons, offices and support spaces. The educational center also includes a kiln room, science classroom, computer labs, and a fitness room.
The building site improvements incorporate new parking and a variety of landscaped areas including a new seating area for the educational center that helps soften the impact of what once was a sea of uninterrupted asphalt.
