Miller Barn

Frederick Ward Associates, Inc.

Frederick Ward Associates, Inc. (FWA) provided architectural, survey, and civil engineering services for a new 6,055-square-foot barn built on 15 acres of sweeping farmland in Harford County, Maryland.

The property is owned by a local business person, and includes the original farmhouse, which is currently used as a private residence. The owner reached out to FWA with the desire to construct a barn for heavy farm equipment storage at the site of the property’s original barn.

At first glance, the building looks more like a sophisticated event venue than a storage barn, with its red cedar board-and-batten wood frame, stone veneer base with complementary pressure-treated cedar-mitered columns, forest green metal-seam roof, and copper cupolas. The bespoke design carries over to the covered front porch that oversees the sprawling farmland. Nestled into the foothills behind the building is a handsome, 12-foot-tall stone retaining wall.

The main interior level of the barn is outfitted with stained T1-11 interior siding that clears 14 feet to the airy loft, which was designed for additional storage. Dormers in the roof provide natural light that floods the interior space through the double-hung, white vinyl-framed windows. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the 14 × 14 foot barn doors facilitate the transportation of large machinery in and out of the barn.

Crafted by local Amish contractors, the design of this building focuses on the quintessential nature of Harford County’s strong agricultural roots, while providing functionality and ease of use for the owner.
