Miami Township Fire Department Station No. 69 - Cleves, Ohio

Located just west of Cincinnati, Miami Township contains a mix of suburban development and rural areas. The Township was looking to replace the oldest of their three fire stations, Station 69, which had been built in the 1940s to house a volunteer fire department. Response time mapping showed that the optimal site for a replacement station was that of the original station, so it was decided to build on land adjacent to the station to maintain uninterrupted fire and EMS service to this area of the township during construction.

As the site was in a rural part of the township without sanitary sewers, a septic system took up a good portion of the site. This, combined with the desire to keep the existing station in use during construction, limited the area on which the station could be built and pushed the design team to make sure space was used efficiently.
The resulting new 17,000-square-foot facility includes three apparatus bays, two mezzanines, six bunk rooms, a large training room, hose tower, and training facilities. The training facilities, located in and adjacent to the apparatus bay, include a wall for rappelling, a manhole in one of the mezzanines for simulating confined spaces, a balcony and window in the hose tower for practicing rescues, and hoist rings in the hose tower for rappelling practice. The large training room doubles as a community meeting room and a voting station during elections.
The exterior of the building was designed to have a more residential scale and appearance while still retaining qualities of a civic building. This was achieved through the use of gabled roofs with standing seam metal roofing, dormers on the apparatus bays, face brick and cast stone. Simple, durable materials were used on the interior … ground-face and painted CMU, painted gypsum board, and polished concrete floors.
With all living and administrative spaces on the ground floor, easy access is provided to the apparatus bays. The bunk rooms and day room are situated to provide the shortest route possible to the bays, improving response times for the Department.
