Grand Haven State Park in Grand Haven, Michigan, is one of the most popular parks in the state for camping and day use.  Located at the mouth of the Grand River, the park offers spectacular views of Lake Michigan from many vantage points, including the Lake Michigan Grand Haven Lighthouse Pier, individual campsites, and the beach.

An existing restroom building had exceeded its useful visitor service and operational life expectancy, and had been slated for improvement. Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division (MDNR PRD) had a standard plan and supporting technical studies for replacement toilet buildings, which was the starting point for the new building design.

The design challenge was to create a simple, functional facility that matched existing buildings on site, yet was economical and required little maintenance. The design also had to consider the high humidity and special weather of a beach environment.

The plan provided for protected entrances, because of extensive windblown sand. Since some bathrooms are seasonal, they can be closed off with overhead coiling doors. One unisex toilet room is insulated and heated for year-round use to accommodate winter activities, including fishing from the pier.

The building materials include concrete masonry bearing walls, glued laminated beams, and wood decks to form the structure. The exterior materials of wood, stone, champagne anodized aluminum, and galvanized metal roofing were chosen to match existing buildings on site; A 1938 Beach House, a 1938 Storage and Maintenance Building, and a 2008 Toilet/Shower Building.
