Garage Addition - Fairfield County, Connecticut

When the owners of a pre-existing 1947 house were contemplating a new granny flat, they decided to incorporate a garage addition as well. This addition would expand their existing home by adding a full bathroom, mud room, and laundry center. Their proximity to the beach — as well as the New England winters — created the need for a mud room to save their newly renovated main house from the wear and tear of active teenagers.

Bill Leavy, of WL Architecture, conferred with the owners and decided to create the ambitious project without sacrificing the aesthetics of the existing residential neighborhood. No zoning was required for the garage, and ultimately the decision was made to add 12 feet of width to the existing 2-car garage. In addition, a carport was included, along with a small attic for storage, with pull-down stairs, as well as four feet added to the side of the garage for a man-cave workbench and cabinets, plus additional storage for garden tools and a snowblower.

The dog-leg entry includes a 6' by 12' mudroom with customized cubbies for clothing, shoes, and a place for skis and beach paraphernalia. Wainscoting was installed in the entire area to enhance the colonial decor. No-slip porcelain tiles were used in the mud room area for flooring as a buffer from the harsh weather, with the owners grateful for an entry room that saves the rest of the newly renovated house. Behind the mud room is a full bath with shower and additional massive storage for linens and household cleaning supplies and equipment. A full laundry center is located behind the bathroom. This entire part of the addition is directly off of the kitchen and gives the feeling of always having been there, a truly successful project with many years of use to come.
