Dino Hutchings Worship Center

Studio 6 Architects

Posted: December 18, 2019 | Projects

Evangel Temple Assembly of God has a long history in downtown Fort Smith and is known for its vibrant membership and leadership team.  Hoping to replace aging facilities and to meet their growing worship and service needs, Evangel Temple started planning replacement facilities in 2007.  However, initial planning studies and construction estimates revealed that full replacement exceeded their financial capacity.  After years and several different fundraising efforts, the decision was made to focus on only a new worship center and children’s center first.

The project site is on the southeast corner of Dodson Avenue and Towson Avenue, a busy intersection just on the edge of downtown Fort Smith.   Several small buildings, not architecturally significant, were demolished to begin construction.  The slightly sloping site resulted in the southeast corner of the building pad being raised approximately 5’ above existing grade.

The design of the facility reinforces the primary street edges by placing the taller building masses up close to the right-of-ways.  The street corner is expressed by a tower element featuring an illuminated cross and Evangel Temple signage.  This corner happens to be the high point of a hill, providing sight lines to the project from far to the south. The building mass slopes to the south, following the natural grades.  The primary entry is on the south, along with the 100 parking spaces included in the project. The south property line is a segmented block retaining wall, varying from 18” to 9’ tall.

The building structure is a pre-engineered metal building system, arranged in two articulated masses, the larger for the worship center and the smaller for the children’s center.  The worship center portion includes an 876 seat worship room with fellowship space and a café.  A sound and lighting booth is included on the floor of the worship room.  A video control booth is located on a mezzanine level at the back of the space.  The children’s center features a 200 seat worship space and 12 Sunday school classrooms for grades Kindergarten through 6th.  Four nursery rooms are included for day care during services.

Vibrant colors were used in the children’s areas, and subdued warm tones in the main worship and café areas.  The interior scheme is modern and fun, an interesting contrast to their existing, dated facilities.  The main volume of the space is left with an exposed ceiling up to the deck.  All construction items within the ceiling were painted either a black or dark purple color, including the mechanical ducts, electrical conduits, fire suppression and sewer lines.

The exterior skin of the building consists of brick and concealed fastener metal panels installed both horizontally and vertically.  Stacked cultured stone is used as an accent at exterior exposed columns at the portico and covered drop-off.  The roof is standing seam metal panels, with a TPO membrane at the tower and a concealed condenser farm on the roof of the covered drop off.
