Department of Veterans Affairs Bathroom Remodel

This unique project consisted of renovating eighteen patient bathrooms at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA.

The mission was divided into phases to minimize impacts of construction on patient care. JXR Constructors was able to sequence work to minimize disruption. Work was also phased and coordinated so that the four key isolation rooms were not out of service during flu season.

The existing design was defective due to improper floor slopes and undersized floor drains that resulted in not only slippery floors, but shower water running into both patient rooms and corridors. The original showers were at a higher elevation than the adjoining bathroom slabs. 

The main goal of the project was to address floor slope issues to prevent water from running into the patient rooms and adjacent hallways.  This was accomplished via installation of two stainless steel linear drains per bathroom (replacing a single circular drain). Demolition of areas around the new drain locations was required as was building up of the flat slab with an epoxy base to attain proper slope to both drains.

One linear drain was installed by the shower of each room and the second by the bathroom entry door. This required demolition of existing tile and cove base flooring via mechanical means. The plumbing crew had to saw cut and wet core the concrete slab to allow space for new linear drains.

All this work was done during normal working hours in an occupied hospital ward. It required extensive Infection Control measures to be engaged. Temporary barriers were installed and negative air was attained and held at [-0.030 IN. W.C.] or better negative pressure. 

The infection control measures and protocols used on this project were used as a learning opportunity for the Hospital Safety Committee and Infection Control staff to show hospital staff what to expect from contractors on future projects.

In addition, new in-wall trap primer valves and access panels were provided for the linear drains along with required service isolation valves. All toilet flush valves were replaced with new manual units. All required vent lines were either upgraded or relocated to accommodate additional fixtures. The principal challenge of the project was working around existing structural steel beams underneath the concrete slabs that were in the path for new drain and vent pipes. 

JXR had to create unique solutions to re-route pipes behind existing walls at patient rooms and into the interstitial. Infection control measures were in place to protect flooring and medical headwalls with sensitive surface-mounted medical equipment before any demolition was performed and to ensure all wall finishes matched existing conditions.

Bathrooms are now finally safe to walk on, due to the slip resistance properties presented by the resinous epoxy flooring, and the faster drainage offered by the new linear drain system. Hospital staff are content in knowing the project created a safer, cleaner work environment for attending the medical needs of veterans.

In total, approximately 5,056 square-feet of active medical space was renovated as part of the project scope of work.
