Crozet Western Albemarle Library - Crozet, Virginia

MB Contractors, Inc.

Posted: March 15, 2023 | Projects

The new and expanded library in the heart of downtown Crozet was intended to meet many needs from the start. From conception, the design team sought to create a focal point for community engagement, to expand economic opportunities, to honor Crozet’s heritage by preserving the existing downtown character, and, of course, to create a modern library space with technology centers, book repositories, and quiet reading spaces.

The space was constructed to house over 75,000 books. In addition to having specific reading spaces for separate age groups and having advanced technology center availability, the entire lower level of the library serves as a storefront for new business.

Construction focused on minimizing environmental impact and was awarded LEED® Silver Certification in 2014. Both the construction and design process for the 23,000 square-foot facility received points for:

  • Sustainable Site (site selection, development density and community connectivity, low-emitting and fuel efficient vehicle involvement, quality control of storm water management and heat island effect for the roof)

  • Water Efficiency (water efficient landscaping and water use reduction)

  • Energy and Atmosphere (optimize energy performance and enhanced refrigerant management)

  • Materials and Resources (construction waste management, recycled content, regional materials, and certified wood)

  • Indoor Environmental Quality (IAQ performance, outdoor air delivery monitoring, IAQ management plan, low-emitting materials: paints and coatings, low emitting materials: carpet systems, thermal comfort design, thermal comfort verification, daylight and views: daylight for 75% of spaces, and daylight and views: views for 90% of spaces)

  • Innovation and Design Process (construction application, design application, and LEED accredited professional)

While the project envisioned new economic and community horizons from its inception, it did not overlook significant traditions long held dear by its community. In the final days before the grand opening, many volunteers gathered to help transfer books by hand to the new location. This much anticipated Book Brigade was held just a few days prior to doors being opened to the public for the very first time. Excited locals showed up to participate, including Mary Plumb — retired Crozet Librarian and the third and fourth grade classes from Crozet Elementary School.
