Contagion Athletics is a 24-hour, 38,000-square-foot athletic facility housed in a massive pre-engineered metal building. It includes a 12,000-square-foot mezzanine, running track, and cardio training area. Exterior curtain walls focus light to illuminate the interior.

Kevin Van Voris, co-owner, says his past experience as a former West Texas A&M kicker inspired him to create a super gym where local athletes can train, and anyone looking to get in shape can do so in a safe atmosphere. Van Voris says the facility is unlike anything else in the area, and serves as an asset for local high school teams, as well as nearby medical centers.
"We're able to allow high schools to come rent out that turf space; that way they can have practices indoors, and we can train teams indoors,” explained David Van Voris, co-owner of Contagion Athletics.
Building construction is fully non-combustible, with sprinkled fire protection and alarm system. The roof is standing seam with 11" of insulation. The exterior wall system is horizontal roll-formed metal cladding over MBI.
The gym includes a three-lane track made from poured rubber "Pulastic" surface, where spikes can be worn, and is 1/13th of a mile in total length. Athletic flooring is new generation virgin rubber 2' × 2' tiles. Railing cable systems and stairways are one-of-a-kind, all designed and fabricated in Amarillo.
The front lobby includes, as a focal art piece, a fully original retired Navy A-4 jet engine suspended from the building structure. Art features continue as a retired robotic arm salvaged from a Detroit automobile manufacturing facility is on display in the well of the interior stairway. The plate-loaded machine area features an expanded metal suspended tile and metal grid system, and site-applied graphic art by a local street artist. The Yoga Studio features conduit art incorporated into the lighting system by the electrical contractor. Café cabinetry is all locally fabricated steel.
The location for the 38,000-square-foot facility was selected with need in mind — there were no athletic facilities on that side of Amarillo. A nearby medical center offers a steady clientele of health care workers seeking a safe place to exercise after a hard day of practice.
The state-of-the-art facility offers the most advanced weightlifting and cardio training equipment in the entire region, and features expansive spaces, amazing equipment, premium flooring surfaces, massive amounts of natural light, and advanced cleaning solutions. Woodway deckless treadmills provide the most comfortable running surface invented to protect member’s joints, and the gym includes Prime Fitness, Rogue, and Arsenal Strength ergonomic equipment for exceptional results and safety.
A professional quality half-size football turf field is also located in the center of the facility, along with cardio, yoga and aerobics on the 1st and 2nd levels. There is also a coffee and smoothie dining area that has drive-thru service, and an auto spa that offers treatments for enhancing your car’s exterior shine.
From the advanced equipment to the care of the personal trainers, Contagion Athletics truly offers Amarillo the most advanced gym this side of the Pecos.
