The construction industry added 20,000 net new jobs in December 2019, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a year-over-year basis, industry employment has expanded by 151,000 jobs, an increase of 2.0%.

National nonresidential construction spending declined 0.3% in November but is up 5.1% year over year, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data published today by the U.S. Census Bureau. On a seasonally adjusted annualized basis, spending totaled $781.1 billion, 1.8% lower than the cyclical peak in April 2019.
New technology, processes, and project delivery methods are quickly blurring the lines between design and construction. The barriers which formerly existed between design professionals and constructors, both physical and legal, are gradually being broken down. Where design, procurement, and construction were traditionally undertaken independently, now design, estimating, scheduling, planning, value engineering, and procurement can be performed simultaneously by a team of designers and constructors from many different companies.
