The current sanctuary was completed in 1911 and is listed in the National Register as part of Bennettsville Historic District. The original Fellowship Hall is located below the Sanctuary and is relatively small, with a low ceiling, and is only accessible from the inside by narrow stairs. The rear educational / administrative addition was constructed approximately 70 years ago, and the current building had basically remained unchanged since then.

The Tyler Construction Group was hired by First Presbyterian Church to build a new Fellowship Hall adjacent to the existing structure.  The construction site was tight and sloped. The new facility would be constructed using a Design-Build process.  GJS Architecture was hired to provide architectural programing and full architectural design.  Tyler Construction Group is entering 40 years in the construction industry and approaches every construction project with the care and professionalism needed to deliver the finished product on time and within budget.

GJS Architecture is an architectural, planning, and interior design firm located in N. Charleston, South Carolina. GJS specializes in ministry planning, programming, master planning, renovation, restoration, design, and construction administration of churches, Christian schools, and related facilities, and provides architectural services to a variety of clients on a local, regional, and national basis. Founded in 2003, GJS Architecture has had the opportunity to be of service to approximately 400 church clients.

The design of the Fellowship Hall involved a complex solution in providing for a completely handicap accessible facility with an interior connecting the “Gathering Room” with ADA-compliant ramp and stairs connected to the previous building.  The Gathering Room is a transitional space between the old and new, with an earlier piece of stained glass used as a “window” accent feature mounted on the original exterior brick wall.

Exterior materials for the new facility were chosen to be compatible with the existing brick structure, yet they still express a modern appearance.  A covered vehicular drop-off with a handicap-accessible ramp to the front covered porch / walkway was designed to provide covered pedestrian access to the new facility.

The structural system chosen for the new project was a single sloped, pre-engineered metal building system having brick parapet walls on three sides.

The main room has a high coffered ceiling and was constructed using a suspended ceiling system with gypsum board horizontal bands. The horizontal bands continue vertically where they intersected with the exterior walls. White aluminum storefront was chosen for the exterior windows and main entrance.  Luxury vinyl plank flooring was chosen for its aesthetic appearance, durability and ease of maintenance.

The kitchen will not only be used to serve church dinners, but for community outreach as well.  In their new facility, the church members held their annual Thanksgiving Feast on Thanksgiving Day 2021 and prepared and delivered 1,411 hot turkey dinners.
