Boys & Girls Club of Bartlesville

Posted: November 6, 2018 | Projects

The Boys & Girls Club of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, is a non-profit organization. Money for the $5,000,000+ project was all donated by the local community – including several donors from private and local business sectors. A great deal of fundraising was involved in making this project happen for the children in Bartlesville and surrounding communities.

The project included the demolition of the old 1950s building and replacing it with a new state-of-the-art 30,000-square-foot pre-engineered metal building with a complete site overhaul. The project was built in three phases over the course of 1½ years.

Construction on Phase 1 started early in 2017, which included the new building and site work on the property, while keeping the existing building open until the new building was completed. The exterior skin has aluminum storefront doors/windows, horizontal and vertical metal R-panels, insulated rectangular metal panels, and a standing seam metal roof.

The interior partitions are CMU, metal studs/drywall, and aluminum storefront doors/windows – the storefront windows give a sense of openness to the interior. It consists of an exposed structure with a simple saver roof insulation system, painted ductwork, vinyl tile floor patterns throughout the facility, painted CMU walls down low for durability, and painted drywall up high.

The new gymnasium includes a professional wood floor basketball court and volleyball court with bench seating on both sides. The lobby has a secure check-in window, and the check-in/reception area has an abundance of counter space and built-ins.

The employee office area and “war room” has a secure entrance off the lobby, and access into the club from behind the reception area. Off the check-in area are meeting rooms with an operable panel partition that can shut to make two rooms or open to make one big meeting room. The commercial kitchen has a large prep area, commercial appliances, janitor’s closet, and a serving line for children’s lunches, with plenty of seating in the adjacent café.

The game room has an enormous big screen TV gaming area with seating, pool tables, foosball, etc. Branching off the game room is a learning center, classrooms, art room, STEM lab, and dance studio that is also an aboveground storm shelter constructed with 8″ filled CMU walls and a 12-inch-thick concrete slab ceiling/roof.

On the north wing of the building, the Teen Center has a smaller big screen gaming area with seating, pool tables, and a built-in counter/cabinet/seating area for studies. Also in the north wing is a separate Teen Room, a soundproof music room, and a sound booth. The boys’ and girls’ restrooms have a gang-type sink and water fountain outside the main entry of each gender-specific restroom.

Construction on Phase 2 began early in 2018, and included demolition and removal of the old building and construction of an outside basketball court, landscape, parking, and bus lanes.

Construction on Phase 3 started late in 2017, and included a new Cal Ripken baseball/soccer/kickball field covered with artificial turf that entailed extensive site work and drainage modifications.

Overall, the project was a great success for the community, the children, and the donors. Mr. C.J. “Pete” Silas would be proud!
