Aransas County ISD – White Gymnasium Rebuild

WKMC Architects, Inc.

Posted: March 2, 2021 | Projects

In August of 2017, Hurricane Harvey swept up the coast of Texas from Port Aransas to Houston. The storm devastated much of the Texas Gulf Coast. The Rockport-Fulton High School suffered so much damage that virtually all of the 700+ students had to attend schools in neighboring communities for the next nine months.

The school district was able to have the High School operational by the fall of 2018, but there were still significant facilities which had been completely destroyed and not yet rebuilt.

One of the District’s classroom teachers wrote to Ellen DeGeneres to call attention to the plight of the students and Aransas County Independent School District. Upon learning of the lingering impact of the storm, Ellen persuaded one her flagship advertisers, Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores, to donate one million dollars to help the school district replace the competition gymnasium which had been completely destroyed in the storm. That additional funding gave the District enough resources to construct a totally new gymnasium. The design of this new facility began in the summer of 2018. The project construction was completed in time for use in the fall of 2019.

The facility was designed so that existing dressing and shower facilities in the adjacent gymnasium could be used until funds could be raised to complete a second phase expansion to the new gymnasium.
