Advanced Business Solutions (ABS) provides IT technical support to professional businesses. When their former office became too small for their needs and disconnected team members within their own departments, they realized it was time for a change.

The new building design called for an open plan to maximize collaboration between departments and enhance their daily workflow. They developed a new 30,000-square-foot office facility to accommodate the current staff of 75, with expansion capabilities to accommodate up to 135 employees.
The overall program included three large conference rooms, two conversation rooms, four private offices, and a large open café/kitchen for informal meetings of employees.
The 4.4-acre site design includes the new two-story office building and space for a future office building. Sitting on a former asphalt plant and coal yard, this building has transformed the area into an economic hub within the surrounding neighborhood. The new office building contains 15,000 square feet per floor, and has space for future expansion. The architectural design features metal panels and glass walls.
The entry faces south to the main street, and the design provides for a large overhang and obliquely placed windows to allow natural light in, but shields the occupants from direct southern exposure. The wing walls were slightly curved to help in distribution of the east and west sunlight within the open plan space.
The design incorporates modest building materials of horizontally placed corrugated metal sheets and an EIFS infill and base. The interior office space is an open plan concept with collaborative conference spaces and an open kitchen with café seating. Visual and physical connection to the outdoors is provided with garage doors in the open areas and windows throughout the space.
The building is a slab-on-grade, structural steel frame with structural metal stud exterior walls. Corrugated metal sheeting, EIFS and curtainwall/storefront windows complete the exterior façades. Energy efficient low-E tinted blue glass is utilized in the building glazing systems and the garage doors which connect the interior to the exterior environment for direct ventilation. The mechanical system is a variable volume rooftop unit with VAV and FPT units. The electrical design includes LED lighting and efficient lighting controls throughout the building. The interior flooring is comprised of faceted vinyl tile in a random digital pattern with red accents at the building core gradating to monochromatic shades of grey at the extents of the building.
Coordinating faceted carpet tiles line the private offices and conference rooms. Red and dark grey accent paint colors highlight the structural columns and brace frames that support the structure and the “floating” convenience stair. The building systems are exposed and celebrated with an open ceiling, exposed mechanical and electrical systems.
To help alleviate noise in the open office area, the design utilizes an acoustical steel deck and sound masking system. The building design seeks to provide a simple but interesting solution to the program requirements.
