The DCD Public Building Cost Per Square Foot Analysis
The Building Cost Per Square Foot Analysis is compiled from actual
medical new construction projects published by Design Cost Data™ magazine. This
guide will provide DCD readers a quick comparison of medical building
construction costs on similar size projects.
The cost per square foot reflects common design features
throughout the U.S. and does not include architectural and engineering fees. All
projects were escalated to June 2011 and then to select cities that are present
on each case study data page featured in DCD..

LEGALLY SPEAKING: Minimizing the Legal Pitfalls of Sustainable Design and
Construction (Part 1)
It really is impossible to put your arms around the number of green building
opportunities that are sprouting up all across the nation—whether you are
talking about federal, state or local projects. Sustainable design and
construction raises unique legal issues for all parties who contribute to the
project. It affects design professionals, contractors, sureties, insurance
companies, banks, owners, subcontractors, material suppliers, vendors, and their
respective employees. In this first part of a two-part article, we will explore
ways to minimize the legal pitfalls on a green project.

The Right Brick for The Community
The architects who designed the Mobile County Government Center Annex
knew they wanted velour texture brick for the exterior of the complex. But
choosing the right brick color was essential in helping the building blend in
with the rest of the downtown area. They chose Crimson Light Velour modulars
from Carolina Ceramics Brick Company. Local distributor Riley-Stuart Supply
procured the brick for the project. “Carolina Ceramics has been providing us
with high-quality architectural brick, and exceptional service, for over ten
years,” said Law Stuart of Riley-Stuart Supply.

Cost Trends
Construction Cost Trends for 2011
Housing bottomed out, then inched its way up only to have back-to-back decreases
in the last few months. One of the founders of the Case-Schiller Housing Index
fears that we may even see a “double dip” recession in housing, let’s hope he’s
wrong. Watch it this year. The commercial sector is now showing some signs of
life. Occupancy rates are climbing back up with light manufacturing real estate
leading the way. Commercial banks have a big stake in commercial real estate
loans, are dealing with the loan defaults and seem to be trying to avoid a
bubble burst like the one in housing. Public construction, which was strong a
year ago, has slowed significantly and flattened out compared to last year.
Unemployment in construction still hovers above 20% and shows no sign of a
rebound. This all leads to another significant decrease in construction spending
as a whole.
