Arthur O'Leary WHEN IS AN ARCHITECT JUSTIFIED IN CERTIFYING THAT A CONTRACTOR BE EJECTED FROM THE CONSTRUCTION SITE?
One of the most disruptive of events that can occur in construction is the owner’s decision to oust the contractor and terminate the contract. The owner’s necessary right to terminate and the governing terms and conditions should be included in all construction contracts. Contracts based on standard AIA documentation include a practical termination procedure that respects the interests of both owner and contractor.

CONCRETE WALLS GIVE PRE-SCHOOL A HEAD START ON ENERGY SAVINGS The San Luis Headstart Childcare Center in San Luis, Colo., was designed to provide a solid foundation for local children under the age of five, offering comprehensive child development programs that improve their readiness to enter the school system. NEW CONCRETE STAIN ADDS TO CHURCH SPIRIT The floor of the Evergreen Christian Church in the small Rocky Mountain town of Evergreen, Colorado, wasn’t slated for renewal this year. It was only four years ago when members dedicated their new sanctuary, whose unique architecture and open symbolism in design, according to the church, “represents lifting up all believers to freedom of worship and breaking through to the Light.” But, earlier than planned, the sanctuary’s brilliance began to diminish as the original acid stain on the concrete floor deteriorated. THE ROLE OF TILT-UP IN GETTING GREEN
By Jim Baty, Technical Director of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association It is almost impossible to flip through an industry trade magazine or visit an association website without finding a mention of green construction. However, if you feel a bit “green” about understanding this new trend, you are not alone. An August 2002 survey conducted by Buildings magazine and the Corporate Realty, Design and Management Institute noted that while 99 percent of respondents feel the green concept is important, 63 percent indicated that the trend is “not at all” or only “somewhat” understood by members of their firm. As such, the Tilt- Up Concrete Association (TCA) has committed to educating concrete contractors not only about the latest trends and developments in the green concept, but also the fundamentals of this new industry buzzword.
