The expansion of Janney Elementary School involved a two-story addition constructed on top of an occupied one-story portion of the building. The design-build team of Tompkins Builders, Inc. and Fanning Howey delivered the addition while minimizing disruptions to the learning process.

The design-build team’s creative approach involved the off-site construction of key building components. On weekends, contractors delivered the finished components to the site, allowing the expansion to occur without comprising activities in the occupied school.

The creative phasing of construction activities was especially important given the past history of construction on the Janney campus. In 2013, the school finished a whole building renovation and addition. While the project was well received, the process was maligned as intrusive and disruptive.

In juxtaposition, the 2014 addition is widely praised for the ability of the design-build team to complete the scope of work while respecting the students and teachers currently attending Janney Elementary School.
