Walnut Hills High School has a long-standing reputation in Cincinnati for excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities. During an extensive renovation of the school there was a significant expansion in size and the replacement of the athletic stadium. During construction the school was forced to convert their on-campus practice field into a temporary staging area for modular classrooms until construction was complete. This included stripping the grass and topsoil and replacing it with a large gravel lot for the modular classrooms, eliminating the only on-campus practice field the school had and forcing the athletic department to find and rent fields elsewhere.

Once the major work to the school building was complete, it became obvious that a proper practice field facility was needed to replace what was left of the old one. Fortunately for the school, it has several very generous alumni and the alumni association received a large gift from the Christopher family to pay for the design and construction of a new practice facility. The school was so pleased with the architect from the school renovation, they decided to hire SHP Leading Design for the new practice field as well. The alumni association selected DER Development Company (DER) to be the general contractor for the project, however direct contracts were given to The Motz Group for the synthetic turf field and Sturdisteel for the modular press box and bleachers.

In addition to the field and bleachers, the project included construction of a concessions building that housed restrooms, storage, ticket booth and concessions area, and a batting cage building which will also serve as a multi-sport indoor practice facility with retractable batting cage netting. The entrance included a pre-engineered walkway cover that ran between the two buildings and covered the ticket booth window. Concrete plaza areas connect the entrance and buildings to the bleachers. Field lighting equal to that in the existing stadium completed the transformation of the facility into something more than just your everyday practice facility. DER's contract included all civil, building, MEP construction, providing the field at dirt subgrade to the Motz Group ready for them to install their synthetic turf system. DER built the concrete pad and foundation for the bleacher and press box to be installed by Sturdisteel.

The completion of the project was topped off by a wonderful dedication ceremony including the Christopher family, the alumni association members, faculty and staff, student athletes from every sport, and members of the design and construction teams. Walnut Hills High School is now a proud owner of a beautiful "practice" facility that will serve students for decades to come.
