The original 15,000 square foot regional library has long been one of
the busiest branches in the Hillsborough County, Florida system and was
greatly in need of expansion. The 10,000 square foot addition and
interior renovation was commissioned to allow the building to better
meet the needs of the community and provide flexibility to meet future
program and technology changes.
The expansion contains new Reading, Children's and Multi-purpose areas.
An existing art glass installation was relocated into the expansion.
Playful art glass tones are complemented by new carpet, paint
selections, whimsical furniture and shelving in the Children's area. A
new Community Room, Pantry and restroom facilities occupy the north end
of the addition. These areas are directly accessible from a new exterior
entrance to facilitate after hours community functions. The interior
renovation contains a new vending café, bookstore and Teen area located
adjacent to the main entrance lobby.
The new construction was configured to work within existing vehicular
and pedestrian circulation and preserves the unique natural
characteristics of the site. The exterior of the addition continues the
aesthetic image of the existing building. New standing seam metal roof,
brick masonry, aluminum windows and stucco alcove element match the
existing library. The result is the appearance of an expanded and
updated building rather than an obvious break between old and new.
