The Springdale School is a part of the Corbett School District in
Oregon. The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
but has not been in use since 1995.
The Corbett School District realizing a need for more space to
accommodate rapid student growth in the district wanted to utilize the
Springdale School once again. The District submitted a Request for
Proposals for Architectural Services to renovate the abandoned school
building but since the building's Occupancy Permit had expired years
ago, the County required the facility be upgraded to meet present day
code requirements, including seismic and energy upgrades.
The Rommel Architectural Partnership was hired in January 2012 to begin
work on the school renovation. One of the primary challenges the firm
experienced on the project was that the owner did not have any documents
detailing the construction of the original building. As a result, the
architect was left with many unforeseen existing conditions that were
discovered as construction progressed. Shortly after the project started
construction, the school board decided to obtain additional money to
complete Phase 2 and 3 which included a seismic upgrade of the original
1935 building, replacing windows to match the original design, upgrade
the HVAC system, lighting, insulation and energy systems.
The Springdale School officially opened the Phase 1 portion of the
building renovation to the public on August 24, 2012 with Phase 2 and 3
completed on October 1, 2012. Both students and faculty are now enjoying
the Springdale School Alteration.
