St. Eugene Catholic Church is home to a thriving parish that has been an integral part of the northside Oklahoma City community for over 50 years. The congregation has had dreams of building a new church since the 1960s. Parishioners have been using a "temporary" church for over 50 years because their focus has been on building their school and daycare. Ground was broken for the new building in 2010. The beautiful new church seats 800 people for both traditional and Spanish masses. The design is a traditional cruciform plan using classic materials to reflect the congregation's desire for a traditional Romanesque place of worship with contemporary amenities that promote efficient function and comfort.

Approaching the entry, the north facade of brick and arched cast stone is embedded with glittering gold glass tiles creating a grand first impression. Upon entering the large narthex, rich oak wood trim, marble statue-niches and antiqued glass pendant fixtures fill the entry space with a warm glow. A marble and glass-tile baptistry enhances the spiritual atmosphere with the gentle sound of flowing water.

The entire church is purposefully designed to facilitate traditional Catholic liturgy. Baptistry, altar and tabernacle are aligned and crowned by the crucifix to symbolize the faith journey. Pews are arranged so that everyone faces the altar-even the choir is positioned as an integral part of the worshipping community.

The church commissioned an Italian sculptor to create the crucifix suspended above the gold-domed baldacchino. The transepts include niches to accommodate artwork from the former worship space which is currently being renovated into a parish hall. The altar and pulpit of marble are accented with gold tiles and gold-leafed carvings. Thirty-three stained-glass windows are being crafted and will be installed throughout the church over the coming year. A bridal room, new restrooms and a sacristy were also included in the expansion.

A gallery links the new 20,000 square-foot building to the existing church complex. Exterior materials are brick with cast-stone detailing and a split-faced masonry block base complementing the original church and contextual neighborhood aesthetic. The roof and dome are metal clad to resemble copper. A crowning feature of the new St. Eugene's church is the cross-topped dome that creates a highly-visible and dramatic presence in northwest Oklahoma City.
