The Alexandria YMCA called on JLG to design a new 56,000 square foot YMCA facility. Working alongside the national YMCA, Young People's Place, and select community partners, the team is realizing a dream for kids, teens, seniors, and families. Features designed into the YMCA facility include a full-service day care center, a lap pool, a leisure pool with slide, and a state-of-the-art health center that over looks the gymnasium and front lobby.

The purpose of the Alexandria YMCA is to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. Alexandria is both a summer vacation destination and a manufacturing and service business location. Consequently, there is also a great need for before and after school childcare. Since the YMCA is the only community center in the area, demand is high for the YMCA's programs and services. Built with the expectation of the continued demand for the YMCA's programs and Alexandria's projected population growth, the building is designed with future expansion in mind to meet the needs of the community years into the future.

The facility in laid out in such a way that programmatic elements, and participants, are as interconnected and engaged as possible. The lower floor of the facility houses the child watch area, gymnasium, aquatic center, locker rooms, and administrative offices. Partnered with the Young People's Place, the youth facilities are separated physically from the main part of the facility, but still hold a visual connection to the main facility via a glazed wall that adjoins the main lobby of the center. The upper floor is home to the track, wellness center, and studio space. The track overlooks the gymnasium on one side and the aquatics center on the other, allowing the runner to experience all the areas of the facility while generating a dynamic, interactive, atmosphere throughout. The wellness center is set within the footprint of the track, overlooking rest of the facility, fully engaging the participants of the health center with the rest of the facility.

The Alexandria YMCA has proven to be highly successful with the community and has currently begun moving forward with expansion plans. With state-of-the-art health facilities and a dedicated community, the Alexandria YMCA is expected to thrive within the local community for years to come.
