The restoration of and addition to historic Middleton Hall was
commissioned by Mississippi State University. Mississippi State
University is located in the northeastern section of the state and
serves a student population of over 20,000. Middleton Hall houses the
Army and Air Force ROTC Programs on the Mississippi State University
campus. Built in 1910, Middleton Hall is a Mississippi Landmark
Building, which in the 1980's was named after General Troy H. Middleton,
commander of the 45th Infantry Division in World War II. The historic
classification of Middleton Hall puts it under the Mississippi
Department of Archives and History regulations, which require a
Mississippi Landmark permit. Five years prior to this addition and
renovation phase, Shafer & Associates, PLLC restored the exterior within
the context of Archives and History regulations.
The scope of the addition and renovation project included additional
wings on the north and south sides of the building, restoration of the
existing space, new interior walls, mechanical and electrical systems,
and refurbished windows along with new interior fixtures and finishes.
The building is on a very tight site leaving little space for additions.
The major design criteria were to respect the existing building while
renovating and expanding it to meet the additional space and functional
requirements and to bring the building into code compliance. The north
and south wing additions provide ADA compliant restrooms on the first
and second floors, three additional offices and two additional vaults
(in the basement). The renovation of the existing historic building
includes three standard lecture-style classrooms (14, 21, and 18 seats)
and a personnel room (13 seats).
The restoration/renovation/addition of Middleton Hall preserves the
historic landmark building while updating it for current and future
departmental/program needs. The benefit to Mississippi State University
and the state are in the preservation and effective reuse of an existing
structure, which is an important piece of state history.
