Country Meadows, founded in 1982 by former Pennsylvania Governor & Mrs.
George M. Leader, includes ten campuses offering a variety of services
to seniors, including Independent Living, Personal Care, Memory Support,
and Skilled Nursing Care. As part of the expansion of the Allentown,
Penn. campus, Cornerstone Design Architects worked alongside Country
Meadows to develop a new, 50 unit, Independent Living Facility which
adjoins the existing buildings on campus.
Taking into consideration the new building would unite with the existing
facility, the focus for the articulation of the exterior facade was to
provide a look that would tie into the existing buildings but provide an
updated look. Exterior materials included EIFS, brick, and vinyl
railings. The interior of the new facility offers a brand new commercial
kitchen, dining space, resident apartments, outdoor courtyards, club
room, lounge spaces, and resident storage.
Features of the apartments include unique, varying layouts, full
operating kitchen with stainless steel appliances, private patios,
courtyard access, and individual temperature controls. The apartments
are available in studio, one, and two bedroom models, with a range of
sizes available in each apartment type. The unique layouts provide a
sense of individuality for the residents, in what could otherwise be an
environment that fosters standardized layouts, treating every resident
as if they have the same space needs.
Features of the common spaces include the dining room, where residents
can order meals as though eating at their favorite restaurant, again
promoting a sense of individuality for each resident. A feature of the
dining room is the double-sided stone fireplace, occupying a prominent
location in the center of the room and towering to the underside of the
vaulted ceiling, with beams running across the vaulted space. The lounge
spaces, club room, and various seating areas foster a sense of community
and provide spaces for residents to interact and build relationships.
The overall atmosphere, regarding finishes, is an elegant yet homelike
feeling, with warm tones, multi-textural materials, and quality
furnishings throughout. Eschewing the institutional feel of many
outdated retirement facilities today, the new independent living
facility at Country Meadows succeeds in providing a place that residents
can be proud to call home.
