Recognizing a need to serve the youth of the community, East Side
Baptist Church constructed a 25,000-square-foot youth outreach building
to provide a safe environment for after-school activities to students as
well as providing additional space for the church's existing ministry
programs. The Center is located near an elementary school and a junior
high school and is also adjacent to a branch of the Fort Smith Public
Library. The Center was constructed on the south end of the church's
property and away from the existing buildings on campus in order for the
building to retain its own image, separate from the other buildings on
The program called for an auditorium space to accommodate 400 people in
addition to a basketball court, which can be converted to a
multi-purpose space seating 200 people at tables with chairs, a
26-foot-high indoor climbing wall, full service kitchen, electronic
games area, an Internet café, full service snack bar, outdoor dining
area, and an administrative office area. The exterior design was chosen
to provide a contrast to the existing buildings on campus. Materials
include utility-sized brick veneer, composite aluminum panels, metal
wall panels, curtain wall framing with tinted, low E glass, and
cementitious wall panels. The interior design pallet consists of
stained, polished concrete floors, painted exposed structure, bright
painted colors and bold wall graphics.
