Born from a humble gathering of 60 believers in 1947, River Hills Baptist Church has seen vibrant growth, especially in recent years. The church has undergone several building programs which led to its present expansion. Busting at the seams, the church body voted in 2009 to construct a new 27,404 square foot, two-story worship center addition. Construction began in June 2009 following a series of meetings with the church's building committee, staff and the design team. The first worship service and dedication ceremony was held in February 2011.

It was envisioned that the new worship center would be located in the center of the church campus between the existing education/office building and the existing worship building. Visually the congregation wanted the interior and exterior design to express their traditional Baptist roots but with a more contemporary nature. The new facility unifies the campus, tying to the education building at both floors and taking advantage of its existing elevator, and connecting to the existing worship building with covered walkways. A sheltered outdoor gathering space was created between the buildings providing relief from the harsh South Texas sun and strong coastal winds.

The building shell is steel framed with a suspended concrete foundation over carton forms. Exterior walls are constructed of face brick over CMU backup and plaster over metal studs. On the interior, the worship center is designed for 990 people seated in fixed pews arranged in a two-story auditorium format. There is a tiered choir loft with seating for 60. The wall behind the choir is richly paneled with cherry wood and has a wheat stalk pattern routed into the woodwork. Above the paneling are cherry wood and glass sliding doors which, when opened, reveal the baptistery and one of many beautiful round stained glass windows. The cherry paneling with brass reveals is found in the entrance lobby flanking each of the main doors into the worship space. Traveling down the main first floor corridor to the education building you pass the ornamental stair and a curved wall inscribed with different biblical Names of God.

At the front of the building there is an octagonal lobby space with wood ceiling and arches, accent chandelier and 8 round custom stained glass windows. On Sunday mornings, it serves as a gathering space for church members to greet each other. It was also designed as a ceremonial beginning point for wedding processionals.
