The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is the second largest K-12 provider in Pennsylvania. Their newest high school, Pope John Paul II, located in Montgomery County, was designed to accommodate an initial capacity of 1,200 students within a building of 209,000 square feet. The core facilities, HVAC, power and technology systems have been constructed to accommodate the anticipated expansion to 1,600 students. The architectural massing of this two-story school is tucked into the rolling landscape of the 92 acre site, acknowledging the sun's motion, prevailing winds and natural vistas. Other benefits are realized by situating the Lower Level partially in grade. The intensity of the structural connections, the visual impact of the structure and its daily energy usage are all reduced. Grade access for both levels is provided. Construction systems include spread footings, steel frame, brick and metal panel skin, aluminum doors and windows and an adhered EPDM roof membrane. Interior partitions are painted concrete block and impact resistant gypsum wallboard. Floor finishes include VCT, terrazzo and epoxy materials. Lighting systems strive for energy efficiency and ease of maintenance.

Site improvements include a football field and running track, softball and baseball fields, soccer and practice fields, six tennis courts and a continuation of a Township greenway path. Separate access is provided for automobile and school bus drop-off and parking. Road improvements include the re-engineering of Township Line Road (a state road) and the realignment of Rittenhouse Road including a signalization package. Cascading retention basins, emergency vehicular access, robust landscape buffering, rain gardens and accommodations for additional development are provided.

Educational spaces and amenities include forty-one standard classrooms; five Science Lab Suites; a 1,200 seat auditorium with full production capabilities supported by 2D and 3D Art Rooms, Stagecraft Workroom and Storage, Choral and Instrument Rehearsal Rooms, Keyboard Classroom and individual practice rooms; a Competition Gym, an Auxiliary Gym and Cardiac Room supported by Locker Rooms and Offices for the Physical Education program as well as Home and Visiting teams; a Cafeteria seating 400 with a contemporary Servery and a full service Kitchen; an Intermediate Unit, Guidance, Administration and Student Activities Suites; a Library Suite with a Distance Learning Classroom. Unique to a Catholic High School is the Chapel Suite with a sacred space accommodating 70 students, a Sacristy, Reconciliation Room and School Minister's Office.

Pope John Paul II affords the staff and students accessible technologies in the form of unique Data, IP based Multi-Media, VOIP Communications, Public Address, Physical Security, 80211 Wireless, Point of Sale and Video Surveillance systems. All systems platforms are fully integrated and employ a standardized topography utilizing IP based technologies. HVAC systems include a dual fuel/dual boiler, dual chiller two pipe hydronic design serving VAV and fancoil units. The Administration, Auditorium and Gymnasium Suites operate independently reflecting the facility's ability to zone energy usage and physical access for after school operation.
