The new CY Middle School in Casper, Wyoming is designed to accommodate three grade levels for a total of 750 students. It is organized along a north-south "main street" that separates two two-story core academic wings (east side of main street) from one-story common spaces (west side of main street). The building divides the site into four distinct quadrants: approach for staff, bus, and service traffic (north end of main street); approach for parent and visitor traffic (south end of main street); outside learning area (east); and athletic play fields (west).

Each of the three grade levels is divided into two smaller "cores," the two-story core academic areas contain six small learning communities of 125 students each (four in the north wing and two in the south wing). Each core group of students is provided with a science classroom and science prep area along with an enclosed classroom, an enclosed double classroom that can be subdivided with an operable partition, a large CTE studio space, a conference room, an open work area, a teacher workroom, lockers, and a restroom group.

In the center of the building, main street opens onto the Cafetorium and onto an outdoor courtyard sheltered from the wind between the two academic wings. Students leave their core areas to eat lunch and socialize in these spaces as well as to receive instruction in the library media center, music, and athletic facilities.

The environmental conditions present in Casper provided an opportunity to add alternative energy sources to the state's energy portfolio by harnessing the ever-present wind and abundant sunshine. CY Middle School features a wind turbine and photovoltaic array that teach children about alternative energy, and help to offset the power needs of the laptop computers issued to each student and teacher in the facility.

The RB+B led design team met the project energy goals by reducing the lighting power density below 0.75 watts/sf through daylighting strategies and by utilizing high performance glazing, spray foam insulation, and careful detailing to improve the building envelope. The building is "Designed to Earn the Energy Star." The building footprint is very compact to reduce its exposure to wind and reduce snow-drifting issues.

The poor soils on the site necessitated the creation of a crawl space capable of housing the HVAC equipment. The crawl space allows the equipment to run more efficiently, have easier access for maintenance, and achieve a longer lifespan. Displacement ventilation, demand controlled ventilation, energy recovery, and condensing boilers are utilized to reduce the energy required for space conditioning.
