The story of Utilities Analyses, Inc. (UAI) dates back to over 50 years
ago when a commitment was made by a man named Carl Shaw. He promised
himself when he graduated college that he would be the Vice President of
Georgia Power Co. by the time he was 50 years old. If this dream did not
come true, he would still be young enough to start his own company. He
kept this pledge to himself and acquired UAI, which had been in business
since 1972, just three weeks after his fiftieth birthday in 1986. UAI
continued to grow over the years by bringing in employees who had
previous experience working at various utility companies. Their goal was
to help large users cut back their cost for utility services by
understanding how the utility works from the inside-out. Carl’s son,
Kevin Shaw, took over the business in 1999. Today they are one of the
country’s top energy rate consultants.
UAI was looking for a new office space in 2009 when they stumbled upon
an office for lease in a small warehouse office building, Commerce Park
at Northbrook in Suwannee, Georgia. Kevin Shaw admired the design of the
space and found out that the architectural and design team was Pate
Design Group (PDG), a company owned by a longtime friend of his, Kirby
Pate. UAI contacted PDG and they began working on a new office build-out
in the same building.
UAI and PDG worked together to design a contemporary open office space
within the two story suite. The build-out included new stairs and an
addition to the existing second floor mezzanine for more work space.
There is a variety of work space in the new UAI office including
enclosed private offices, open cubicle offices, and a flex space for
temporary employees or visitors. UAI requested a very simple open space
and expressed to PDG that they were not afraid of using color, as long
as the décor was functional and inviting for entertaining clients. The
color scheme that PDG created for the new office was inspired by their
corporate logo colors of grays and orange. The use of crisp white and
the shades of gray throughout the space give the office a light
contemporary feel and the pops of orange, green, and yellow create a
bright and exciting work environment.
