The Montgomery County Commission hired Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood to design the new state-of-the-art Montgomery Detention Facility located in Downtown Montgomery, Ala. The massive structure opened in September 2009 and inmates were moved into it in October 2009. The existing structure, built in the 1980’s, was overcrowded and at capacity—the structure was housing almost twice as many inmates as planned for. In order to maximize the budget allocated, GMC renovated the original facility and added a new building to house an additional 696 prisoners. The existing kitchen and laundry spaces were completely overhauled to accommodate the increased inmate population. The old structure is now used for maximum-security prisoners as it is fitted with the appropriate cells for them.

The design contains approximately 170,000 square feet of new construction and approximately 18,000 square feet of remodeled existing space. The new facilities include a 696-bed facility built on the property across the street from the existing jail. A pedestrian walkway connects the two buildings over McDonough Street, complete with a new elevator and stair tower attached to the existing detention facility.

Designed with security in mind, the housing unit utilizes panelized steel cells arranged in multi-level pods around a dayroom that is overlooked by a central control booth. In addition a vehicular sally port, intake transfer and release, administration, master control, medical, and command center spaces are incorporated into the design. Intricate electrical and mechanical systems are also included due to the nature of the facility.
