The Montessori school opened in June of 1989 as the St. Charles
Montessori Academy under the sponsorship of Greater Missouri Builders.
With an ever-growing student enrollment, the school could no longer
perform at the present premises.
Rataj Krueger Architects, Inc. (RKAI) was commissioned to design a new
progressive, multi-purpose, two story building that included 4 Class
rooms, multi-purpose meeting rooms, office and a student library.
Chairman of the Board Scott Campbell, expressed his vision to the
Architects, of a Midwest rustic style building. RKAI took this concept
and developed it into the school building to blend with the surrounding
environment.
To achieve the required building design, of a natural setting, RKAI
first incorporated eco-friendly design and materials, with large open
wooden trusses, natural lighting and the use of dormers, and vertical
exterior siding. The project also included master planning features,
such as; a silo type structure for the science department, with a
telescope observatory on the top.
One of the goals was to make the entire campus flow with a series of
decks, overlooks, and ramps to provide total accessibility. The school
building environmental impact analysis incorporates the sustainable
Energy Star® qualified Eagle panel system. This system includes both
walls and roof panels, constructed off site, with resource efficient and
energy conserving materials, and EPS insulation, which contains no CFC's
or ureaformaldehyde, providing better indoor quality.
Now with an enrollment of 130 in the toddler, primary and elementary
programs the school is growing to 27,000 square feet, with proposed
additional outside nature and gardening facilities.
The Montessori school looks forward to continued expansion and is in the
process of adding a garden area.
