Based on their extensive healthcare design knowledge and long term relationship with the West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS), IKM was retained by Canonsburg General Hospital (part of WPAHS) to design a new Emergency Department.
Due to the limited space available for future construction on the campus, it became apparent that the Hospital needed to examine their decision to proceed with the project in the context of the facility’s long-term goals. A focused facilities master plan was initiated with the objective of understanding the facility implications of the institutions strategic vision. The leaders of Canonsburg General Hospital believed that the needs of their growing community could only be served through major capital improvements to the aging facility.
Canonsburg General Hospital is located in an area, south of the City of Pittsburgh in Washington County, Pennsylvania where the local municipality expected to see an extraordinary increase in population over the course of the next five years.
Partnering with the Hospital, IKM assisted in establishing the goals and objectives of the facilities plan. Goals identified included establishing a competitive assessment tool, optimum space allocations, future flexibility, operation efficiencies supported by facilities, and identification of short and long term capital requirements.
According to the hospital, the Emergency Department usage was reflective of the growth in the local population; ED Visits were up from 16,670 visits in 1998 to 19,000 in 2002. Seventy percent of the hospital’s inpatients are admitted through the Emergency Department.
As a result of the planning process, IKM developed a preliminary classification of projects based on the priority categories defined in the strategic facility plan. The Emergency Department received the highest priority.
The study validated the need for the Emergency Department project and IKM proposed a location that allowed for future vertical growth of the hospital. This was counter to previous concepts of horizontal expansion that actually limited growth potential. The Hospital was able to approach the ED project with an understanding of its impact on future facilities decisions. The plan also provided the framework for future decisions in the context of the whole facility.
Multiple options for an ED expansion were developed. The selected option was a 15,700-square-foot emergency services addition to accommodate 23,000 patient-visits per year. The new addition encompasses 18 exam treatment rooms including two trauma rooms as well as infectious isolation, secured holding and a decontamination room. Support areas included registration/triage, the general waiting area and children’s waiting, and the nurses’ station and utility rooms.
The scope of renovation expanded to include administration and physician offices and the staff lounge and locker rooms as well as a new ambulatory surgery suite registration and waiting area for the existing adjacent ambulatory care center.
