Mississippi Baptist Health Systems, a major healthcare provider in Central Mississippi, is expanding their healthcare services to the Madison, Mississippi community to meet the increased need for quality healthcare in that area. The City of Madison is experiencing tremendous growth in population and economic development activity while demanding adherence to strict guidelines with respect to overall planning considerations, architectural style, materials and quality, as well as design of landscape, hardscape, graphics, signage and the like.

The initial charge to the design team was to conduct a thorough inventory and analysis process for the sixty acre site prominently situated at the intersection of two heavily traveled vehicular arteries – Interstate 55 and Mississippi Highway 463, the thoroughfare serving as the entrance gateway to the City of Madison. A long-range program and master plan was then prepared for a comprehensive health care campus, to ultimately include a 200-bed primary care hospital, two medical office buildings, an ambulatory surgery/diagnostic facility, child care center, wellness center, boutique hotel, and outparcels for a possible restaurant, bank, pharmacy, or other related uses.

The overall master plan was designed to be executed in multiple phases, each phase composed to take advantage of views, orientation, access and relationships to future components of the campus, and an implementation strategy developed to ensure that all essential healthcare services remain in operation while construction of future phased expansions are in progress.

Construction is now complete for Phase I, the first of two medical office buildings, which is a four-story, 87,138 square foot facility. The building offers tenant space for a wide range of healthcare providers, including: Primary Care, Imaging/Radiology, Pediatrics, Sports Medicine & Rehab, Woman’s Clinic, ENT, Ophthalmology, Optical Shop, Pulmonary Clinic, and provisions for a future Ambulatory Surgery Center.

The building is comprised of a structural steel frame with cast-in-place concrete floors. The exterior envelope is composed of an architectural precast base, modular brick veneer system, synthetic stucco accents and feature elements, aluminum storefront and curtainwall system, and modified bitumen roof system. In addition, sloped, standing-seam metal mansard roofs were employed to help establish an architectural vocabulary more in keeping with the Madison community context and to conceal mechanical equipment. A chilled water mechanical system serves the first floor, while floors two through four are served by roof top mechanical air-handling units.

In order to take advantage of a competitive construction environment, Baptist Health Systems elected to utilize a design, bid and build delivery method. Fountain Construction Company of Jackson, Mississippi was the successful bidder. The building, along with related site preparation and development, was completed in February 2007, on time and within budget.
