Blue Grass Automotive in Louisville, Kentucky developed a centralized campus for five automobile dealerships. The master plan of the seven acre site included Audi, Porsche, Saab, Land Rover and Jaguar showrooms. Each dealership is based on a prototype design from the automobile manufacturer which was uniquely combined on this site. The dealerships required high visibility to showcase their automobiles as well as product display islands. While the site design required a significant amount of parking surface; it was well screened and softened from the road with landscaping and berms.
The Audi building is a free-standing facility which contains the corporate offices for Blue Grass Automotive. This facility is constructed of insulated tilt-up concrete panels, structural steel frame and glass curtain wall systems. Features of the dealership include an open automobile showroom, sales offices, customer waiting area with cafe, vehicle drop off area and service area. Custom lighting, sloping roof structure and ceramic tile floors provide an open area for automobile display. The corporate offices overlook the bright showroom and the sales offices are finished with warm maple wood furniture. The 14 service bays have natural light from clerestory windows and the floor finish is a poured resinous floor for ease of maintenance.
The Porsche/Saab facility is constructed of a combination of insulated tilt-up concrete panels, structural steel frame, glass curtain wall systems, metal panels and EIFS. The facility consists of sales areas, showrooms, customer waiting areas and vehicle service areas. The Porsche showroom has ceramic tile floors which continue to the exterior for vehicle display areas. The decorative lighting is suspended from an open structural frame above and compliments the vehicle displays and the sales area is open to the showroom for ease of customer service. The Saab showroom is a large open space with 16 foot ceilings and natural light through aluminum storefront systems. Both showrooms have access to the 14-bay service area which has a resinous floor and tilt-up concrete walls.
The Land Rover/Jaguar building is a 28,654 square foot facility. These facilities are constructed of insulated tilt-up concrete panels, structural steel frame, aluminum composite panels, EIFS, glass curtain wall system, and stone veneer. The entry to the combined facility is a structural glass system that branches into each individual dealership. The L-shaped showroom plan allows for individual finishes for each dealership. The Land Rover showroom has a natural finish with wood beams and stone veneer while the Jaguar showroom is finished with stainless steel trim and polished ceramic tile. The service area includes 21 service bays with an adjacent parts department that utilizes high density part bins to minimize storage requirements. The exterior tilt-up concrete panels are coated in different colors to minimize the height and mass of the building.
The completion of each building was sequenced beginning in June for Audi, July for Porsche/Saab and August for Land Rover/Jaguar in order to provide individual openings for each dealership during the summer months.
