The program for additions and alterations for the Fort Garland Community Center included the development of an overall Master Plan for improvements to an existing community center building with a two-phased implementation strategy and design and construction of the first phase. 

The architects determined that a new entry and reception area would establish an efficient circulation pattern for the eventual build-out of the program. The new south-oriented glass entry replaced the existing west entry. A new reception area gave the administrators view of all who entered and left the building. An old exterior fire escape was replaced by a new interior concrete and steel stair that provides a second floor exit through the lobby as well as a gathering and presentation space.

A pre-engineered steel structural system was selected to clear span the new gymnasium and to meet the requirements of a limited budget and tight construction schedule. The client asked that the Phase II indoor track encircle the Basketball Court in Phase I. The architects realized that the interior tapered columns they were considering would require the building width to be increased by six feet to prevent runners from running into the columns. The 1,000 square foot increase in building area was unacceptable, however, because it would increase an already tight budget by $150,000. Thus, an alternative solution was needed. The architects devised the idea of basically turning a Butler building inside out. They decided to place the tapered main structural columns on the outside of the gym to save interior floor area and volume and express the structure externally. When the Construction Manager informed the design team that the exterior columns and the interior roof supporting beams would create a dew point differential that could make it rain inside the new gym, the architects came up with the solution to wrap the roof insulation beneath the interior beams. Thus, cold air would surround the beams and eliminate the condensation issue. 

With these major issues resolved, the architects selected a KORETEK steel and foam building skin panel system because it was compatible with the pre-engineered structure and would save installation time and cost. The same systems were applied to the Dining Area Addition. Stucco and horizontal corrugated metal panels were applied to the KORETEK panels as cost-saving finishes. 

Exterior colors were selected based on the eastern philosophy of the Chakra System, which determines how light energy is absorbed by the human body. The new entry is yellow-peach, symbolizing the community's interconnectedness. Red on the gymnasium's west wall emphasizes the community's connection to the earth. Green exterior steel stimulates the heart chakra. The silver metal panels represent invisible threads that connect the people to the heavens. The same color applications continue inside, with the addition of purple, which symbolizes the community's connection to the Source of all things. These colors play dramatically against Mount Blanca, which is covered in snow much of the year. The center's director says that the building's design and colors are bringing an unprecedented number of people to the center.
