Located on a tree-covered residential site in St. Louis, the Owner required retention of the 150 year plus oak and cataba trees. Sustainable civil design features re-engineered the site to be environmentally friendly with a connection to the bike trail.
Rataj-Krueger Architects, Inc. designed pier and above grade, grade beam to avoid the tree root system, while tree roots were pruned prior to excavation, and shoring allowed for limiting overdig.
The variety of the exterior materials and textures used throughout encouraged exploration of shapes and forms and patterns which complimented the character of the site. The use of elements such as clearstory windows, light tubes, operable windows, and glass block allowed natural light and ventilation, in addition to the 90% outside views as part of the LEED®’s criteria. The concrete form masonry unit system (CFMU) enabled the building to utilize the exposed stone finish, and smooth exposed for the interior, while providing a R-21 structural wall system finished on the exterior and interior.
LEED® certification distinguishes building projects that have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and ability to recycle by meeting the highest performance standards while taking advantage of the environment. The key to Green Solutions in new commercial construction is the consideration of the overall building’s thirty year life cycle and it’s re-use. Rataj-Krueger Architects, Inc. together with Wind Engineering addressed the unique challenges and opportunities of implementing green building strategies, commercial office building and site to create sense of community.
