Because of the immediate need to provide facilities for its burgeoning student population, the Jordan School District elected to undertake a competition for the design of its new middle school. The MHTN Architects design team included experts in middle school curriculum as well as facility operations and maintenance to respond to proposed design ideas from an educator’s perspective. This expanded the planning process to include a comprehensive overview of developing philosophies in middle school planning, design and operations.

MHTN developed a curriculum-based program which provided the road map that guided the design team through the planning of the facility. Rooted in the recognition that middle-school students are at a significant turning point in their lives, the design effort focused on developing an environment in which adolescents can gain self-esteem through a sense of belonging to a close-knit community.

Divided into small communities for learning, the student-centered plan provides a highly flexible, open and visible environment for project-based, collaborative learning. Small academic neighborhoods with collaborative town-centers provide students with an intimate home where selfdirected, small group and large group learning are promoted. The town centers become the focal points of neighborhoods of six learning studios each, providing space for large and small group collaboration, hands-on experiential learning projects, technology applications, work display and reconfigurable furnishings. Teacher collaboration spaces adjacent to town centers promote inter-class and multi-disciplinary collaborative projects. Fostering critical student-teacher relationships, this approach encourages group collaboration which stimulates curiosity, problem solving and critical thinking.

The learning studio forms the basic building block of the small learning community. L-shaped studio configurations surround the town-centers, thus replacing the traditional classroom concept. Each individual learning studio supports various modalities of learning: the “campfire”, where group instruction takes place; “cave time”, where self-directed learning occurs; the “watering hole”, where collaborative learning can take place and the “village”, where lifetime experiential learning is fostered. Space for these individual learning modalities is developed through means of: break-out areas, ceiling height variations, connections to the outdoors, and reconfigurable furnishings. Additionally, wired and wireless computer stations, sound reinforcement, television, and electronic projection equipment support the learning environment. By incorporating common areas as well as linking all academic areas, a gently arcing main corridor transforms the school’s primary circulation space into the Main Street of the acad mic community. This richly textured, day-lit learning street is a multi-functional environment providing community space for performance, socializing, dining, recreation and display. With continuous clerestory day-lighting and uninterrupted sightlines for enhanced staff supervision, students are provided a pleasant, safe and secure space in which to gather and socialize. The main street is anchored on each end by the dining commons and library respectively, thus drawing students through its space. Both the dining commons and library enjoy full two story curtain walls which flood them with natural light while taking advantage of the magnificent and inspiring mountain views.
