The new main fire station of Solvay, New York replaces several small, antiquated facilities. Program requirements included six apparatus bays, emergency response functions, a bunkroom, fitness room, training room, multi-purpose room, kitchen, offices, entrances, foyers and related functions.
Located prominently on a main street corner, the new station assumes a significant role in the community idenity. The steeply sloping site required careful site and building design to create successful vehicular and pedestrian traffic flows, as well as people-friendly work spaces.
The state-of-the-art facility moves Solvay into the future, while reflecting traditions of the past, accomplished through material selection and design sensitivity. The objective is to encourage volunteers to regularly occupy the facility, supported by specialty spaces such as the day and fitness rooms. The training room is equipped to provide continual educational variety for the firefighters.
