As part of its Master Plan, the Kingswood Oxford School located in a residential section of West Hartford, Connecticut, wished to relocate their middle school program from a remote location and incorporate it into their main campus. The neighborhood was traditional and resembled a New England Village with small scale structures that were predominantly brick.
The new facility, which incorporates the original headmaster's house and the rear facade of the main administration building, forms an intimate courtyard and was designed to reflect a very warm and inviting residential character. The brick facade needed to match the modified Flemish bond palette used in the headmaster's house to which the new middle school building connects. The color of the brick facade was chosen for its warmth and ability to mediate between its immediate neighbors and to create a cohesive palette framing the courtyard.
The Estes Family Middle School Building, completed in August of 2003, blends completely with the Kingswood Oxford School and its surroundings.
