Creating a surprising communal experience, the spiritual journey at Keystone Community Church in Ada, Michigan, begins upon first glimpse of the building. Natural materials, clear windows and a distinct lack of Christian symbolism set it apart from its contemporary and traditional brethren. With a goal of 'monstrous community focus, function and efficiency' the church is designed to be 'a welcoming and dynamic community where people can connect with God, with others, and with opportunities to make a difference in our world.'

Early in the design process, Keystone decided to seek USGBC LEED(R) Certification, as it reflected their respect for the land and their commitment to be good Stewards' of God's universe. The result is an efficient, flexible space, maximizing recycled materials, filled with fresh air and natural light.

The Keystone Church building uses a variety of sustainable strategies in its design and construction. The structure is sited in an existing field near a wooded north boundary. This boundary helps protect the auditorium and adjacent common and classroom spaces from the prevailing winter winds. The main entry, offices, and common area face south capturing sunlight for morning and evening services. The covered south porch controls the midday sun and shades the twostory glass curtainwall. Other elevations combine glass with locally fabricated brick and pre-cast concrete. Pre-finished fiber-reinforced siding adds additional texture to the low maintenance exterior material palette. Many spaces were designed to minimize the use of material and reduce the amount of finishing.

The interior is visually open with a commons connecting the major program elements. All occupied spaces offer exterior views in one or more directions. The commons is naturally lit from the south, east, north, and from a translucent skylight. The classrooms have a variety of window sizes placed and scaled for child-sized views. Operable classroom windows allow natural ventilation on temperate days.

Stained concrete creates the durable commons floor without additional materials. The double height auditorium is clad in pre-cast panels that can be reused in future expansions. All paints are low VOC products for minimal impact on air quality. Water use is reduced by low flow fixtures, waterless urinals, and the omission of site irrigation. Energy consumption is reduced by using fluorescent light fixtures to efficiently illuminate spaces when conditions require. Radiant floor perimeter heat increases comfort at glass curtain walls and eliminates high velocity air requirements.

In addition to promoting practices that reduced the resources required to construct their building, the Keystone community is initiating a recycling program that will trickle down into the daily practices of their members and friends.

To encourage the use of alternate means of transportation van accessible parking spaces are provided, bicycle racks are available, and electric car recharging stations are provided close to the building. Additional efforts to expand the sustainable focus beyond the building include the addition of trees in the parking lot and stormwater management via a system of swales and settling basins to minimize the amount of silt which will be transported to local bodies of water.
