Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka, Kansas, a long-time partner with HMN Architects, Inc. in Overland Park, Kansas, had outgrown their surgery department and was in need of an entirely new unit. After working with the hospital and conducting meetings and interviews with the surgery department, the team developed a plan that accommodated both the hospital's and the community's growing needs.

The replacement surgery and central sterile addition includes 18 new spacious operating rooms, 15 of which were entirely built-out and equipped. The remaining three are shelled space for future expansion. The new department also houses 25 new Pre/Post-Op rooms and a new 19-bay post anesthesia care unit (PACU). A new large central sterile / decontamination unit with sterilization, prep-pack, and clean storage supports the sizable department.

The expansion and renovation also called for a new hospital entry and lobby, because the hospital wanted an atmosphere that was more inviting for patients and their families and other visitors, as well as the staff. A large contemporary canopy identifies the new entry, complimenting the exterior of the existing facility, while giving it more of a modern and innovative look.

Warm tones utilized throughout the new lobby, waiting areas, and surgery registration area create a comforting and healing environment, so that patients and family members can feel more at ease. Special rooms in the waiting areas designated for children allow them to keep busy while they wait. Family rooms adjacent to the waiting areas provide a quiet environment to allow for discussions between physicians and family, as well as provide privacy.

Other features of the expansion project include a new distribution warehouse, receiving area, and three-bay loading dock; an expanded CCU waiting room; and staff support area including generously sized locker rooms, offices, and conference rooms.
