Faced with the challenge of creating a safe and secure campus that could handle the unexpected vandalism and lock-down issues, the design explores opportunities for creating a vibrant, yet safe venue for learning and interaction. The campus is designed on a 13.5-acre site located in West Phoenix, and explores unique relationships between indoor and outdoor spaces. A primary goal was to effectively create educational spaces for both indoor and outdoor spaces.

The adjoining site to the west of the campus is a future city park that creates a great opportunity for sharing outdoor play areas between the city and the district, while the design evolves around the district's vision of creating a K-6 campusstyle school with classroom pods. The buildings collectively enclose a large central courtyard that contains a grassed amphitheater and concrete stage, which is regularly used for outdoor performances. Also, a valuable street presence is accomplished with a strategically placed building on the east end of the school.

The campus has four buildings: Building A, located to the northern part of the site, encompasses classrooms for Grades 1-3; Building B to the west contains classrooms for Grades 4-5; and Building C, located in the south, contains special education, resource and Grade 6 classrooms. Building D is the main building of the campus that encompasses administration spaces, kindergarten classrooms, nurses' area, art, media, band and choir classrooms, P.E./cafeteria and kitchen. Located to the east of the site, Building D was specifically designed as a long building that runs north/south, enclosing the courtyard spaces and providing street frontage. The cafeteria is designed with an operable wall with the idea that the 3,600 square feet of space could be broken down into two spaces, wherein one of the spaces could be used for P.E. instruction.

Each of the four buildings on the campus is designed with a distinctive deeprecess flat-arch entryway. These entryways are essentially frame and stucco with an accent paint that gives them their own unique character. The entry to the main administration building (Building D) is a vibrant three-dimensional space, while the dynamism is revealed at the floor, ceiling and facade levels. A large curved canopy at the entrance, created with steel tube columns and a metal deck, reiterates the idea of establishing an inviting entrance.

In fact, all the spaces between the buildings are connected with curved metal-deck canopies. The outdoor entry also contains a seating area created with integrally colored curved masonry walls and recycled lumber that is primarily used by children while they wait to be picked up by their parents. Colored concrete patterns on the floor create a symbolic path that continues into the main lobby of the building.

Buildings A, B and C are essentially stud walls with a painted stucco finish. Building A explores an interesting concept of outdoor teaching that consists of three pods. Each of these pods has a large common space, covered by a curved metal-deck canopy while surrounded by six classrooms, each with its own set of restrooms. These common spaces are typically used as an outdoor instructional space - used for classes such as art, painting etc.

The design was envisioned with the interplay of various concepts such as daylighting, color, form, shade and shadow. To all intents and purposes, each classroom is designed with a combination of horizontally fixed windows and vertical glass blocks that cater to provide daylighting into the classroom. This cohesive design successfully imparts the visual connection with the outdoors, and endows the students with an isolated, yet interactive location for safe and effective learning.
