BLM Architects and Healthsouth Corporation worked together to plan, design and build a new 60-bed comprehensive rehabilitation center to serve the community of Monmouth County, New Jersey. The team also included representatives from Saint Barnabas Health Care System (SBHCS), as their Long Branch, New Jersey facility, Monmouth Medical Center is nearby and a natural affiliate.

BLM Architects provided architectural and interior design services for this project. BLM Architects' mission to provide remarkable, strategy-driven, business- justified solutions for their Healthcare Clients brought this project to completion on time, on budget and on target. BLM accomplished the project goals by providing a high level of communication between the Project Team and the owner. BLM paid close attention to the Construction and Interior Design Standards developed by Healthsouth. Their standards allowed for quick turnaround on owner approval of Interior Design finishes while at the same time giving the architect some latitude in being creative.

This two story facility includes a covered entrance, a 7,000-square-foot gymnasium and other outpatient services on the ground level as well as Administrative and Dietary. The second level contains 30 inpatient beds and support functions. The facility is designed to accept an additional floor which would provide for another 30 beds.

Important design issues include developing an economic foundation system which would overcome some undesirable soil conditions. This was accomplished through the use of picus and grade beams. It was also important to develop separate but distinct entrances for outpatients and visitors. The on-site circulation pattern and good signage were key to this solution. The Interior Design scheme was selected to provide a warm environment which is easily maintained. This goal was accomplished through the use of materials which were designed for easy maintenance and which hold up under the constant abuse by wheelchairs, crutches etc.

Healthsouth is the nation's largest healthcare services provider, with nearly 1,700 locations nationwide and abroad.

The result of the teamwork between BLM, Healthsouth and SBHCS is an economical and efficient building which provides such services as: Amputation Education; Arthritis Treatment; Burn Treatment; Cardiac Treatment; Conservative Back Treatment; Foot & Ankle Treatment; General Rehab; Geriatric Evaluations; Hand & Upper Extremities Treatment; Head Injury; Neurological Disorders Treatment; Occupational Therapy; Orthopedic Rehab; Pain Management; Physical Therapy; Pulmonary Rehab; Speech Therapy; Spinal Cord Injury Treatment; Spine Treatment; Sports Medicine; Stroke Treatment; Temporal Mandibular Joint Treatment and Work Conditioning.
