For seventy-seven years Hurie Hall stood proudly on the University of the Ozarks campus in Clarksville, Arkansas. At one time Hurie held all the classes for the school, the library, post office, gymnasium and bookstore. Age and structural damage made it evident that Hurie would have to undergo a major renovation or be torn down. Exhaustive research was done to try to save Hurie, but it was decided that even if restored, the building still couldn't meet the needs of this growing university. Trying to satisfy the University's requirements, and keeping in mind the place Hurie held in everyone's heart, University officials and the architects decided to build a new building in the same architectural style as Hurie Hall, which would house the communications program and the teacher education department.

Attempts were made to preserve the memory of Hurie by incorporating many of the brick details and re-using columns. The west columns are replicas of the Hurie columns, while the capitals and entire east columns are restored from the building. The existing double hung windows were replicated with new aluminum clad low "E" units.

The building that was demolished was named after W. L. Hurie. The new building was to be named Walker Hall. The architect utilized detailing in the front door etching and the handrails to honor Hurie Hall by designing the balusters with the letter "H" in the base with the letter "W" rising from the base.

The building is a complex mix of old and new. Architecturally, the traditional details lead alumni in a search for their old classrooms. Technologically, the building is designed to train communications and teacher education majors for years to come. Horizontal cable trays and vertical chases allow communication between virtually all spaces in the building. Upon entering the lobby, the technology is immediately apparent. Television screens in the floor and a wallmounted plasma screen allow the University to communicate information to the visitor. The building is flooded with sunlight from a skylight over the atrium, which contains a grand staircase. It houses a distance learning lab and seminar room, a television studio, a radio station, editing rooms, "Smart" classrooms, office space, news writing rooms, a community room, conference rooms, observation room, faculty and student lounges, tutoring center, computer labs, and education media library. Finishes include period oak trim and crown moulding, tile restrooms, a rich color palette, porcelain tile, and bordered carpet in many areas.

The television studio is a working studio complete with video and audio control rooms. An observation room overlooks the studio allowing prospective students and parents the opportunity to observe student newscasts and productions in progress. The studio was to be designed to professional NC-20 standards although the trucks downshifting on the state highway outside the studio produced sound levels to 95 decibels. The studio actually tested to NC-17. This was accomplished by isolating studio walls from the structure and lining them with five layers of sheetrock, acoustical block, isolation blocks and acoustical padding. Together these layers provide the quiet studio needed for radio and television broadcasting.

The sculptural curved staircase, 16-x 44-foot skylight, and red granite entry treads are a result of the project bid of $500,000 under the estimated probable construction cost. The owner included virtually all items on the wish list.
