Arkansas' largest cardiology group brought together three of its five clinics under one roof with its new clinic in west Little Rock. The new facility offers the opportunity to expand cardiology services and provide greater accessibility for appointment scheduling. To the maximum extent possible, all employees at the clinic, including those working in patient records and scheduling, have attractive work spaces and access to a window. The design accommodates 24 doctors' offices around the perimeter of the building, with an adjacent workspace for their nurses.

While 24 doctors practice in the clinic, not all of them have daily clinic hours. The exam areas are designed to enhance doctor efficiency to maximize space utilization with three closely positioned exam rooms per doctor. Exam rooms never sit idle but are scheduled for patient care for 12 doctors that are conducting clinic hours at any one time.

The client wanted an open and relaxing space for the main reception and waiting area. Cromwell Architects Engineers met this challenge by developing a parklike space. This "park" is broken into smaller areas using planters and low walls to make intimate waiting clusters. Park benches and outdoor lighting contribute to the park theme. The main walkway meanders past these areas, whose entry is marked by symbolic gates. The white noise of the fountain masks other ambient noise and assists wayfinding for those with low vision, since they can follow the sound of the fountain to the front door.

Staff circulation avoids patient waiting areas since the practice and support areas of the clinic wrap around central waiting in a "U" shape. The plan is organized into east and west clinic areas, with shared treatment areas such as nuclear camera, echocardiogram, treadmills and labs located between the two clinics. The exterior features native Arkansas stone and a shaded, rain free entry sequence.

The topography of the site allows for a lower level with a separate entry for staff and patients needing rehabilitation and Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) services. The lower level contains 4,400 square feet of shelled space for the expansion of clinic services. The break room/kitchen area on the lower level is designed to accommodate healthful cooking demonstrations, product presentations, full staff meetings, and continuing education.

Additional special systems include electrical wiring sized for the future addition of an emergency power generator, and a staff entry/exit monitor. After an employee enters the building with their key card, a sensor records that person's presence in the building.

The building is designed for a twostory addition at the rear of the building. The site will accommodate horizontal expansion and additional parking.
